3D Numerical Simulation of Gravity-Driven Motion of Fine-Grained Sediment Deposits in Large Reservoirs

Deposits in dam areas of large reservoirs, which are commonly composed fine-grained sediment, important for reservoir operation. Since the impoundment Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), sedimentation pattern area has been unexpected. An integrated dynamic model consists both sediment transport with water flow and gravity-driven fluid mud at bottom, was proposed. The incipient motion driven by gravity form determined critical slope. Shallow equations were simplified to simulate mass transport. combined a 3D Reynolds-averaged model. Solution routines developed models, then used integral movement sediment. simulated agreed well observations TGR. Most deposits found bottom main channel, whereas only few remained on bank slopes. Due mud, that gathered deep channel formed nearly horizontal surface. By considering flow, averaged error deposition thickness along thalweg decreased from ?13.9 2.2 m. This study improved our understanding mechanisms reservoirs can be optimize operations.
